We are recruiting to our new learning and work placement programme with partners Lewisham College. All details in the summary below:

Lewisham College Hospitality Hub is proud to present a new Sector-based Work Academy Programme (SWAP) in partnership with Refugee Cafe, offering a paid work placement based at the Albany in Deptford.

The Refugee Cafe works to relieve poverty and isolation among refugees by providing a path to employment in hospitality and catering. The SWAP will give participants basic skills to work in a professional kitchen, followed by a guaranteed interview for a paid work placement based at the Albany in Deptford.

Refugee Cafe (refugeecafe.org.uk) is a charity committed to opening employment pathways for people with asylum here. Refugees will benefit from workshops, training skills and knowledge relevant to the catering industry.

The Albany (thealbany.org.uk) is southeast London’s leading arts centre, with a café open daily for light snacks and lunch.

Learners will complete a 6-week course, a site visit, and a guaranteed interview for paid work placement. The work placement will be 16 hours per week over a minimum period of 4 weeks.

There are no defined job roles for the café as tasks will be shared daily to give every individual a chance to get experience in both front- and back of house and the kitchen.

Refugee Cafe will pay the London Living Wage.

To refer your client to the course they must be a refugee or granted asylum with permission to work in the UK.

Units include:

  • Level 1 Certificate in Employability Skills 

  • Level 1 Award in Customer Service 

  • Level 2 Food Safety in Catering 

  • Award in Introduction to Culinary Skills 

  • Barista Skills 

Pre-assessment: Wednesday 24th May 2023

Start date: Tuesday 30th May 2023

End date: Friday 14th July 2023

Site visit & 

Guaranteed job interview: Tuesday 18th July 2023

Duration: 30 days (including site visit & interview)

Location: Lewisham College, Lewisham Way, London, SE4 1UT

Eligibility

Your customer must be over 19 years old when enrolling and in receipt of Universal Credit, Job Seekers Allowance or Employment and Support Allowance. Your customer must also be able to commit to the times and duration of the course. All courses are subject to availability, eligibility, and additional support requirements.
